Founded in 1913 near the Santa Ana River, Fontana was largely rural until WWII when Henry J. Kaiser built one of the only steel mills west of the Mississippi just outside the City. Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest health care companies in the US, was founded in Fontana to provide health care to those steelworkers and Kaiser is now the single largest employer in the City. Fontana is also a regional hub of the trucking industry and it houses the largest library in the San Bernardino County system, a renovated historic theater and the NASCAR Auto Club Speedway on the site of the former Steel Mill.
